Hank Jones 400

Best known for his elegant, masterful playing and prolific work as a leader and sideman, Hank Jones was an American jazz pianist, bandleader, arranger, and composer described by critics and musicians as eloquent, lyrical, and impeccable. An NEA Jazz Master, Jones was also honored in 2003 with the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) Jazz Living Legend Award and in 2008 the National Medal of Arts. The oldest of the Jones brothers, in addition to recording over 60 albums as a leader, Hank Jones was perhaps best known as a supreme accompanist. Among the most accomplished sight readers in jazz, his flexibility and sensitive style kept him extremely busy cutting sessions and working in various groups and styles ranging from swing to bebop.

His career spanned a remarkable eight decades and included notable musical associations with Coleman Hawkins,  Billy Eckstine, Ella Fitzgerald, Charlie Parker, Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, Lester Young, Milt Jackson, Cannonball Adderley, and most recently Roberta Gambarini. On May 19, 1962, he accompanied Marilyn Monroe as she famously sang “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” to President John F. Kennedy.

Paying tribute to Hank Jones will be Steve Denny, an active pianist and educator who was recently selected as a finalist for the prestigious 2012 Jacksonville Jazz Piano Competition. Steve holds a BA in music from Loyola University Chicago, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude, and an MM in Jazz Studies from the University of Northern Colorado.

Mr. Denny has performed with jazz greats Slide Hampton, Stefon Harris, Paul McKee, Paul Warburton, Ken Walker and Al Hood. He is involved with many musical projects including his own NYC-based trio, featuring Marty Kenney on bass and Ben Waters on drums, who will join him for this Blind Tiger Tribute to Hank Jones.

In March the Steve Denny Trio celebrated the release of their inaugural recording project, Life in the Basement, out on the Dazzle Recordings label.  The album features an eclectic array of Steven’s original compositions that bridge the gap between the swinging, spirited feel of familiar jazz standards and the emotive harmonies and complex textures of modern music.
