Fall 2013 Saturday Classes :: Jazz Through the Lens of World and Folkloric Music

Starting September 28th at Dazzle… This semester we are very pleased to announce that Greg Harris will be leading our Saturday jazz composition, improvisation and combo classes. The theme, Jazz Through the Lens of World and Folkloric Music is one that Greg is very well-versed in, through years of worldwide study and leadership/participation in numerous world music ensembles. More about Greg here. Topics covered will include: Composition :: Saturdays 10:00-11:15am We will explore composing and communicating the unique power of world music through jazz. Poly-rhythmic concepts in composition. Tradition vs. Innovation Musical etiquette in Ethnomusicology This course culminates in a performance of the students’ compositions by a professional ensemble at DazzleJazz. Theory/Improvisation :: Saturdays 11:30am-12:45pm We will explore how jazz harmony and theory can be utilized to improvise in world fusion styles. New musical styles that result from distinctly original ways of combining jazz improvisation with innovative ideas — and the instruments, harmonies, compositional practices, and rhythms of an existing ethnic tradition. The product is original, but its flavor still reflects some aspects of a non-jazz, ethnic tradition. This course culminates in an (optional) performance at DazzleJazz. Small Jazz Ensemble :: Saturdays 1:00-2:15pm We will be playing and soloing in a combo setting that utilizes the elements of World fusion and Folkloric styles. This course culminates in a performance at DazzleJazz. The eight week sessions will be held at :: DazzleJazz – 930 Lincoln St., Denver, CO Saturdays, September 28th through November 16th. Bob toured Europe with Clark Terry’s Big Bad Band and appeared with Clark Terry at the New York JVC Jazz Festival in the festival’s tribute to him.
