Spring 2015 Jazz Composition and Theory Classes

Announcing Spring 2015 Jazz Composition & Arranging Theory & Improvisation  Classes for all Ages  Saturdays, April 18 through June 6 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Jazz Composition/Arranging :: Saturdays 12:00pm-1:15pm – In this course we will  explore  harmonization and counter-point techniques in melodic development. Learn the secrets of classic and contemporary jazz composition and how to apply them to your own original ideas! The course will culminate in a performance of the students’ works by a professional ensemble. Jazz Theory/Improvisation :: Saturdays 1:30pm-2:45pm – This class provides students with the vocabulary and understanding of jazz music theory that is needed to begin improvising with conviction and musicianship. We will explore different harmonic, melodic and rhythmic elements through the use of exercises, group improvisation, and standard melodies and progressions. The class will cover the most common progressions and beyond.   We are very pleased to announce that Annie Booth will be leading our Saturday classes this semester. Annie Booth is a pianist and composer originally from Denver, Colorado. Growing up in a musical family, Annie began playing the piano and writing music from an early age, going on to study music at the collegiate level and earning a BM in Jazz Piano Performance and minor in French from the University of Colorado-Boulder in 2011. During her time at CU, she was a recipient of an ASCAP Young Jazz Composer’s Award. Annie has performed worldwide, from the main stage of the Telluride Jazz Festival to the Banff Centre in Canada and throughout the Caribbean, Europe, and Asia on luxury cruise lines. These days, she is a regular performer on the Denver Jazz scene and plays at jazz clubs and concert venues around Colorado. Annie Booth is releasing her debut CD, Wanderlust, an album comprised of nine original compositions, in October 2014. www.annieboothmusic.com The eight week sessions will be held at :: Denver School of the Arts – 7111 Montview Blvd., Denver Saturdays, April 18 through June 6. Announcing Winter 2015 Jazz Composition & Arranging Class  Graduation Concert    Tuesday, March 24, 7:00pm DazzleJazz: 930 Lincoln, Denver  Reservations   “““““““““““““““““““““““`   Jazz Composition/Arranging Level 1 (Beginner) :: Saturdays 11:00am-12:15pm – Join us as we explore a wide variety of techniques for manipulating the elements of melody, harmony and rhythm,  as a way to breathe new life into classic jazz standards, in addition to your own original compositions. The course will culminate in a performance of the students’ works by a professional ensemble. Jazz Composition/Arranging Level 2 (Intermediate/Advanced) :: Saturdays 2:00pm-3:15pm – In this course, we will analyze the works of modern jazz composers such as Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson, Tom Harrell, Kenny Wheeler and Brad Mehldau,  exploring their use of re-harmonization techniques, meter and thematic development. Jazz Theory & Composition Level 1 (Beginner) :: Saturdays 12:00-1:15 – Join us as we explore the fundamentals of jazz theory and the craft and legacy of jazz composition. Discover a wide variety of core compositional techniques used in jazz through analyses of selected works and gain insight on how to manipulate the elements of melody, harmony, rhythm, and form in your own original compositions! The course will culminate in a performance of the students’ works by a professional ensemble. Jazz Theory & Composition Level 2 (Intermediate/Advanced) :: Saturdays 1:30-2:45 -After a basis in theory and composition has been established, it is time to dive deeper into the realm of possibilities as a jazz composer. In this course, we will analyze modern jazz compositions, explore reharmonization techniques, use of meters, thematic development, and fascinating new ways to compose with the improviser in mind. Expand your individual voice as a jazz composer! Spring 2014 Saturday Classes :: The New Standard

Announcing Spring 2014 Classes Saturdays 10:00am-3:00pm, May 3-June 21, 2014 The New Standard From Old to New Jazz Composition, Improvisation and Ensemble: From Standards to Contemporary Composition :: Saturdays 10:00-11:15am Can the soul and spontaneity of improvisation live within the framework of composition? Also, how can notation enliven the presence of the soloist? The key is in finding ways to make the blend seamless, so that the two impulses are made stronger by their union, not weaker. Learn about Jazz standards, contemporary styles, re-harmonization, modern fusion, composed improvisation, and collective improvisation, interplay and counterpoint, accompaniment and texture, breathing with phrase length and space, composing from the top-down, and creating depth by composed improvisation. This course culminates in a performance of the students’ compositions by a professional ensemble. Theory/Improvisation :: Saturdays 11:30am-12:45pm Study Jazz theory and improvisation. We will draw from classic jazz standards and contemporary improvisation concepts. Listening to and playing many styles of music, imitating the masters, studying the sounds that move you, making mistakes, and playing the things you love are all part of this process. This course culminates in an (optional) performance. Small Jazz Ensemble :: Saturdays 1:00-2:15pm We will utilize a variety of different styles and compositions to explore our individual voices. From classic jazz tunes to modern feels and styles. Standards, contemporary, re-harmonization, modern fusion, composed improvisation, collective improvisation. This course culminates in a performance at DazzleJazz.   We are very pleased to announce that Greg Harris will be returning to lead our Saturday jazz composition, improvisation and combo classes this semester. Multi-Instrumentalist Greg Tanner Harris leads the Greg Harris Vibe Quintet, and is a member of Bluegrass legend Pete Wernick’s Flexigrass, hip-hop/jazz/soul group Future Jazz Project, New World Citizen Band, 9th & Lincoln Orchestra, and SuperCollider. Among his work as a studio musician, he has released 5 albums. The Greg Harris Vibe Quintet’s new album Glass Gold was recently released on Dazzle Records. Greg has a great interest in the West African Xylophone called the Gyil (pronounced JEE-lee).  He also plays an assortment of Frame Drums from around the world, exploring the Bodhran of Ireland and the Doyra of Uzbekistan. He received an M.M. in Music Performance, Percussion at the University of Colorado, Boulder and a Music Education and Music Performance Bachelor of Arts degree from Fort Lewis College. Greg is a private instructor, high school teacher, and freelance musician in the Denver/Boulder area and has performed nationally and internationally.
