…featuring Bob Montgomery with Al Hermann, Pete Lewis, Dave Hanson, Todd Reid and Ken Walker Sunday June 7th, 3:00-6:00pm at Nocturne     This year the jazz world lost a true treasure – Clark Terry, one of the most popular and influential jazz trumpeters of his generation and an enthusiastic advocate of jazz education, with a career that spanned seven decades. For this Blind Tiger performance Bob Montgomery and his sextet will be playing original compositions of Clark Terry and Bob will relate stories of Clark from almost 50 years of friendship, playing and teaching together. Bob Montgomery is an internationally recognized performing artist who has appeared throughout Europe, Australia, Canada, China, Mexico, Japan, Great Britain, New Zealand and the United States. He has performed in back-up orchestras for such artists as Sammy Davis Jr., Diana Ross, Tony Bennett, Quincy Jones, Nancy Wilson, and many more. Bob toured Europe with Clark Terry’s Big Bad Band and appeared with Clark Terry at the New York JVC Jazz Festival in the festival’s tribute to him. Clark speaks of Bob several times in his new autobiography “Clark”. Bob’s reputation as an educator has earned him many awards, including Colorado Jazz Educator Of The Year. In 2012 the Five Points Jazz Festival honored Bob for lifetime contributions to the development and appreciation of Jazz. Bob is Executive Director of Colorado Jazz Workshops, Inc., and a founding board member of the Gift of Jazz. Bob is also founder and director of the Telluride Student Jazz All-Star program held each year at the Telluride Jazz Celebration. This program has helped hundreds of young jazz musicians enter the world of jazz as professional performers. Announcing Winter 2015 Jazz Composition & Arranging Class  Graduation Concert    Tuesday, March 24, 7:00pm DazzleJazz: 930 Lincoln, Denver  Reservations   “““““““““““““““““““““““`   Jazz Composition/Arranging Level 1 (Beginner) :: Saturdays 11:00am-12:15pm – Join us as we explore a wide variety of techniques for manipulating the elements of melody, harmony and rhythm,  as a way to breathe new life into classic jazz standards, in addition to your own original compositions. The course will culminate in a performance of the students’ works by a professional ensemble. Jazz Composition/Arranging Level 2 (Intermediate/Advanced) :: Saturdays 2:00pm-3:15pm – In this course, we will analyze the works of modern jazz composers such as Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson, Tom Harrell, Kenny Wheeler and Brad Mehldau,  exploring their use of re-harmonization techniques, meter and thematic development. Learn the secrets on contemporary jazz composition and then apply them to your own original ideas! The course will culminate in a performance of the students’ works by a professional ensemble. Jazz Theory/Improvisation :: Saturdays 12:30pm-1:45pm – This class provides students with the vocabulary and understanding of jazz music theory that is needed to begin improvising with conviction and musicianship. We will explore different harmonic, melodic and rhythmic elements through the use of exercises, group improvisation, and standard melodies and progressions. The class will cover the most common progressions and beyond.   We are very pleased to announce that Annie Booth will be leading our Saturday classes this semester. Annie Booth is a pianist and composer originally from Denver, Colorado. Growing up in a musical family, Annie began playing the piano and writing music from an early age, going on to study music at the collegiate level and earning a BM in Jazz Piano Performance and minor in French from the University of Colorado-Boulder in 2011. During her time at CU, she was a recipient of an ASCAP Young Jazz Composer’s Award. Annie has performed worldwide, from the main stage of the Telluride Jazz Festival to the Banff Centre in Canada and throughout the Caribbean, Europe, and Asia on luxury cruise lines. These days, she is a regular performer on the Denver Jazz scene and plays at jazz clubs and concert venues around Colorado. Annie Booth is releasing her debut CD, Wanderlust, an album comprised of nine original compositions, in October 2014. The eight week sessions will be held at :: Denver School of the Arts – 7111 Montview Blvd., Denver Saturdays, January 31 through March 21.
