Jazz Education Programs Jazz Composition, Improvisation & Performance Courses with Marc Sabatella ~ Spring 2013 ~ Latin Jazz ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Gift of Jazz winter courses offered by professional pianist, composer, and educator Marc Sabatella begin on April 20, 2013. The theme to this series of courses is Latin Jazz.  Afro-Cuban music has long been a part of the jazz tradition, and Latin jazz has been enjoying even greater popularity in recent years.  In these classes, we explore the rhythms and other aspects of the most important Latin jazz traditions such as the mambo, cha-cha-cha, and rumba.  Because this music is typically driven by percussion, as part of these classes we will all learn the basics of common Latin percussion instruments such as clave, conga, and bongo. Please enroll soon to reserve your spot! Jazz Composition – Latin Jazz: Saturdays 10:00-11:15am Latin jazz has its own conventions of form and uses very specific idiomatic rhythmic patterns.  In this class, we will learn to write music for a Latin jazz ensemble.  This involves understanding the role of the “clave”, deciding upon a specific style to form the basis for the percussion parts, developing a piano montuno or other specific accompaniment parts, making sure the rhythm of your composed or arranged melody fits the chosen clave and style, creating appropriate introduction, ending, interludes, and solo sections, and more.  The class culminates in a performance of student compositions by a professional Latin jazz ensemble. Where : Dazzle Jazz: 930 Lincoln St, Denver, CO When : April 20 through June 8 (8 week program) Fee: $150.00 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Jazz Improvisation & Theory – Latin Jazz: Saturdays  11:30am-12:45pm Improvisation in Latin jazz involves learning to work within some fairly specific rhythmic structures, all based on a pattern called the “clave”.  In this class, we will work on understanding these rhythmic structures through the study of parts typically played on various percussion instruments.  We will work on understanding how to improvise within these structures by analyzing great recorded instrumental solos in these styles.  We will also work on feeling these rhythms and responding to them in our own improvisation, as well as other topics involved in creating interesting solos.  This course culminates in an (optional) performance. Where : Dazzle Jazz: 930 Lincoln St, Denver, CO When : April 20 through June 8 (8 week program) Fee: $150.00 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Gift of Jazz Small Jazz Ensemble: Latin Jazz Saturdays 1:00pm-2:15pm Work on soloing and playing in a combo setting with a special emphasis on Latin jazz – music that combines elements of the jazz and Afro-Cuban traditions.  This course culminates in a performance. Where : Dazzle Jazz: 930 Lincoln St, Denver, CO When :  April 20 through June 8 (8 week program) Fee: $150.00   Space in all classes is extremely limited.
